EPBC Act Review
December 19, 2008
MEFL made a submission to the Independent Review of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
In October 2008 the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts commissioned an independent review of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act), the Australian Government's central piece of environmental legislation. The EPBC Act is required to be reviewed every 10 years, and this is its first review since it commenced in July 2000.
The review will assess the operation of the EPBC Act and the extent to which its objects have been achieved.
MEFL's submission outlines our position, which is that the EPBC Act needs to be amended to include a greenhouse trigger. This was a recommendation of the Labor Party when it was in opposition in 2006, and MEFL hopes that the Rudd Government will take this opportunity to put it into action.
